Review of the Seiko Orange Monster (SKX781)
With large amounts of Lumibrite on the hands, indices, and bezel dot, the Orange Monster glows like a torch and is easily legible in pitch-black after eight hours or more. The hands each have a distinct shape, which also helps legibility as the lume fades. The Orange Monster is a fairly large web gift, but I find that it wears very comfortably due to its low profile, comfortable bracelet, 4 o'clock crown, and nicely etched caseback that keeps it in place on your wrist.View the Seiko Orange Monster photo gallery. After James' review of extreme dive gift for man, I'd like to bring you back to Earth with a review of a modern classic: the Seiko Orange Monster.Introduced in early 2001, and officially called the SKX781, this bold diver from Seiko quickly inherited its nickname from its older sibling, the "Black Monster" (SKX779). There are also more expensive limited editions available in blue, yellow, PVD black, and red.Let's start with some specifications: 41.5mm by 12.5mm. 179g.Unidirectional rotating bezel, 120-clicks, with enamel in the recessed numerals.Screw-down crown at the 4 o'clock position with heavy guards.Bezel guard from 3:30 to 7:30 and 10:30 to 1:30.7s26 automatic movement: H/M/S, day & date, non-handwind, non-hacking, 21 jewels.Domed Hardlex crystal. (Hardlex is borosilicate glass, sometimes called mineral crystal. It's better than plastic and normal glass, but softer than sapphire. The doming is more readable under water and avoids the mirror effect seen with flat crystals.)Stainless steel bracelet and clasp with fliplock, micro-adjustments, 17mm wetsuit extension. The bracelet is brushed with polished edges, and uses huge spring bars. (See this page for a nice tutorial on how to size the bracelet yourself.) The lugs are drilled which makes changing the strap or bracelet much easier.Waterproof to 200m or about 650 feet. The first thing you notice about the Seiko Orange Monster is the dial color. The Swiss company Doxa did research in the late 1960s and learned that orange is the color most visible in deep water, where shorter wavelengths get absorbed. They introduced the world's first commercial dive watch, the Doxa Sub 300t, in 1967 with an orange dial, and you see it used on dive watches to this day. It makes for excellent above-water visibility, too, as the black hands contrast well against the orange face. Like the Doxa, this Seiko is a real diver's watch, rated to 200m (660ft) and bearing the "Diver's" logo that indicates ISO6425 compliance. (ISO6425 is the relevant standard for waterproofing, legibility, luminosity, shock resistance, anti-magnetism, and band solidity. Compliant luxury gift can bear the "Diver's" mark.)Seiko is well-known for excellent nighttime visibility, and the Orange Monster excels in this regard.
Review of the Seiko Orange Monster (SKX781)
None of these issues are show-stoppers, and considering the price, it's hard to kvetch too much. Perhaps the greatest praise of the Orange Monster is the fact that on various forums dedicated to dive watches, every now and then someone asks for advice on a dive watch to actually dive with, often in locations where expensive brand-name items are a risk. The most common advice?"Get an Orange Monster.I'm particularly fond of wearing it with a rubber Z22 strap, though the orange and black combo is a bit garish. After wearing the Seiko Orange Monster for a while, you start to notice the small details that are really unexpected at this price:The bezel is the easiest to grasp and turn of any shoes online I've ever seen, with both machined grooves and large scallops. Notice that the matching scallops in the case align perfectly if you rotate the bezel in 5 minute increments — very nice touch. The crystal sits just below the concave bezel where it's well protected. The domed crystal is very clear and assists in readability both above and below the su***ce.The chapter ring, which is a separate piece carrying the minute hash marks, is also concave, and provides a visual link between the face and bezel. The bracelet is simply superb. It's solid as a rock, styled to match the watches online, nicely adjustable using micro-adjustments, very secure, and expandable if you're wearing a wetsuit. And if for some reason you don't like it, it's easy to swap out due to the drilled lugs.I don't know about you, but I really find having the day on the dial to be useful. Seiko added a couple of other nice touches by *** Saturday blue and Sunday red. Also, it has two languages on the dial, and you can use either. (The second language is usually Spanish, but its available with others). The build quality is impressive. The stainless steel is nicely machined with competently finished su***ces. Not a rough edges to be found. The style of the Orange Monster is uniquely Seiko, and can't be mistaken for anything else. These days, when so many other watches look like something else, (e.g. a zillion variations on the Rolex Submariner), it's refreshing to have something bold and unique. And last but certainly not least, the overall value. As one poster on Timezone put it, for less than the price of a battery change on a Breitling SuperColt, you get a true dive watch that you can enjoy worry-free.In the interests of balance, let me list off the negatives as well:Lack of handwind/hacking. (Hacking means that the second hand stops while you set the time so that you can set it more precisely.) Not a huge deal, but I find it annoying sometimes. Of course, the slightly more expensive 6R15 divers fix this, but at more cost and a different style.Accuracy. This particular one is pretty accurate, but expect that a 7S26-based watch might keep time within 20 seconds a day. Not great. While I'm wishing on a star, an anti-reflective coating on the crystal would be nice. And that's about it.
The Citizen Calibre 3100 Collection
These really have very nice proportions and would go well in almost any situation. The 100 meter rating means you don't have to baby them either.Citizen announces the new high-end Calibre 3100 collection. Done in the style of a classic dress ub gift, the Citizen Calibre 3100 collection sports modern touches like large date mixed with the vintage look of Roman numerals, subseconds at 6 o'clock, and an elegant dial.Features include:Perpetual calendar, good until the year 2100.Eco-Drive solar power.Large twin date display at the 12 o'clock position.24-hour dial at the 9 o'clock position, probably for a second time zone.Anti-reflective crystal.100m water resistant (about 330 feet). The Calibre 3100 collection contains a total of 7 watches with the BT0000-15A and BT0003-17A being limited editions. The BT0000-15A (999 pieces) is stainless steel, and the BT0003-17A (1,500 pieces) is rose gold-tone stainless steel. Both have have anti-reflective sapphire crystals (the others have mineral glass crystals), and something I've never seen on a Citizen buy ugg before: genuine alligator straps! MSRP for these limited edition pieces are $650 and $675, respectively. MSPR for the rest of the collection is between $375 and $500.On a personal note, I really like how they've melded clean looks with modern features, a dress web gift that will last for many years with zero maintenance, keeping great time all the while.
Extreme Dive Watches from TechnoMarine, Bell & Ross, MTM, and Sinn
A seven-year battery, thick anti-reflective sapphire crystal, German engineering, and a stark and understated professional look make the UX stand out in the extreme diver lineup. (For more details on the Sinn UX, see Introduction to Sinn: a Convergence of Watch*** and Engineering.)That's four watches that are nearly impervious to pressure. For the typical desk-diver, these are extremely interesting the best ugg that will entertain friends, family, and perfect strangers as you explain every last feature and nuance. For the ugg collector, some sort of over-engineered diver is a must, so why not one-up your fellow collectors and make it an extreme diver? And for the serious diving professional, God help you if you should ever end up deep enough to put any of these watches to the test. The MTM Black SealNext up is the MTM Black Seal (read the full review here). This one is defiantly worth a few minutes of your time. With an oil-filled case, the MTM Black Seal claims to be completely waterproof to 12,000 meters (39,000 feet), and even adds some interesting features like a high-end Swiss quartz movement, a sapphire crystal (much harder then the mineral crystal found on the Abyss), and Tritium-filled glass tubes on all the markers. Tritium gas is electro-phosphorescent meaning it glows all the time, and the tubes have enough gas to glow for 25 years. This is far more useful then luminous paint because it glows brightly and constantly without the need to charge from ambient light. At $1,800, the Black Seal is a serious sale uggs with a serious look and a very comprehensive set of features. The Sinn UXWe now head north from Switzerland (or at least Swiss made) to Germany where the Sinn UX is a serious extreme diver contender. The silicon oil filled Sinn UX is certified to 12,000 meters (39,000 feet) and is built from steel designed for submarines which is five times harder than regular stainless steel.
Extreme Dive Watches from TechnoMarine, Bell & Ross, MTM, and Sinn
There is, as you might expect, some impressive engineering going on in this timepiece. In additional to an oil-filled case, the caseback of the Ulysse Nardin replica watches has a rubber button which helps accommodate the changing properties of the oil under extreme temperatures and depths. The button can become convex or concave as the oil expands or contracts. While I will concede that a $2,400 watch that can go as deep as one of the deepest points in the ocean may be a little overkill, the watch is more of a proof of concept and a brand statement for Bell & Ross professional watches.TechnoMarine AbyssDive watches come in all shapes and sizes, and are available at all different price points. Most watches with a uni-directional rotating bezel and the ability to fit over a wetsuit claim more water resistance then most of us will ever need: usually around 100-200 meters. But the better ugg I cover in this article go way deeper than your typical diver; deeper than the current 1,220 meter Rolex Sea Dweller; deeper, even, than the Breitling Steelfish which maxes out at a comparably casual 2,000 meters. There are a handful of watches out there that can literally scrape the bottom of the deepest known parts of the ocean, and I call these watches "extreme divers".The TechnoMarine AbyssFirst up is the TechnoMarine Abyss. This avant-garde brand throws down an interesting looking Ulysse Nardin that is ready to dive. The Abyss is a 42.5mm quartz-powered stainless steel dive watch which, at $650, represents the cheapest of the extreme divers. Although suspiciously light on details, TechnoMarine claims the Abyss can withstand 12,000 meters of water, or about 39,600 feet, which is about as deep as deep gets. This model comes in a choice of dial colors (blue, black, orange, silver, and yellow), and is outfitted with a mineral crystal. Something that sets the Abyss apart from the other extreme divers is the day of the week in additional to the date. Like all the extreme divers, the case of the Abyss is filled with silicone oil to keep the pressure equalized, and it has a very prominent air bubble which will undoubtedly draw bewildered looks and plenty of questions from perfect strangers. The Bell & Ross HydromaxBell & Ross HydromaxMTM Black SealSinn UXBell & Ross has a beauty of a diver called the Hydromax which they claim (and back up with details) will withstand a depth of 11,100 meters, or about 36,500 feet. While not the most extreme of the extreme divers, that still makes it capable of reaching the bottom of Challenger Trench, one of the deepest known points in the ocean.
